Leaf Category Growing Guide

Broccoli
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"
Seed Spacing: 16"
Row Spacing: 12" between rows (plant 6" from sides of raised beds), but stagger plants so that the plants in each row don't line up exactly with the plants in the rows next to them.
Watering: Even watering.
Special Considerations: Prone to flea beetles, root maggots, and cabbage caterpillars. Grow broccoli under row covers if these pests are a problem in your garden.

Brussels Sprouts

Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"
Seed Spacing: 18"
Row Spacing:  12" between rows (plant 6" from sides of raised beds), but stagger plants so that the plants in each row don't line up exactly with the plants in the rows next to them.
Watering: Even watering.
Special Considerations: Prone to aphids, cabbage loopers, cabbage maggot, cabbageworm, cutworms, diamondback moth harlequin bugs, thrips, and webworms.

Cabbage
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"
Seed Spacing: 12" for early varieties, 18" for late varieties.
Row Spacing: 12" for early varieties, 18" for late varieties.
Watering: Give extra water until head forms, then water regularly.
Special Considerations: Prone to aphids, caterpillars, cabbage root fly, flea beetles, and other pests affecting the cabbage family.

Cauliflower
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"-1/2"
Seed Spacing: 15"
Row Spacing: 12" between rows (plant 6" from sides of raised beds), but stagger plants so that the plants in each row don't line up exactly with the plants in the rows next to them.
Watering: Even watering.
Special Considerations: Cauliflower is a member of the cabbage family, and therefore prone to pests affecting cabbage family crops.

Kale
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"-1/2"
Seed Spacing: 16"
Row Spacing: 16", but stagger plants so that the plants in each row don't line up exactly with the plants in the rows next to them.
Watering: Water well, but water less when frosts begin because high water content in leaves can cause cells to burst, damaging the plant.
Special Considerations: Grow under row covers if affected by flea beetles, but kale is generally less bothered by certain pests than other members of the cabbage family.

Kohlrabi
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"-1/2"
Seed Spacing: 6"-8"
Row Spacing: 12" between rows (plant 6" from sides of raised beds), but stagger plants so that the plants in each row don't line up exactly with the plants in the rows next to them.
Watering: Even watering.
Special Considerations: Kohlrabi is also a member of the cabbage family.

Lettuce
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"-1/2"
Seed Spacing: Most varieties 8-10"; Romaine 10", leaf lettuce 1/2" apart (very close!) or 8" if allowing to grow to full sized heads.
Row Spacing: See "seed spacing" above.
Watering: Water evenly.
Special Considerations: Lettuce likes some shade when the weather turns hot. Shading lettuce during the hotter time of the year can keep it from bolting (going to seed) as quickly as it would otherwise.

Mizuna
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/4"-1/2"
Seed Spacing: 8"-10"
Row Spacing:8"-10"
Watering: No special instructions.
Special Considerations: Member of the cabbage family. Grow under row covers if flea beetles are a problem in your garden.

Spinach
Depth to Plant Seeds: 1/2"
Seed Spacing: 12"-18"
Row Spacing: 12"-18"
Watering: Light, even watering.
Special Considerations: Spinach is a member of the beet family and is susceptible to leaf miners. If you have leaf miners in your garden, grow spinach under row covers. Proper crop rotation will help to disrupt the life cycle of leaf miners.
